Database of the Month

A guide showcasing the Alfred R. Goldstein Library Database of the Month for Ringling College of Art & Design.

What is Shotdeck?

Shotdeck is a website that catalogs frames from movies. It has a very large collection of films from live action to animated to stop motion. Students could use this resource to help with composition assignments. Furthermore, it can be a great resource to do master copies. For freshmen, it can help with the 2D Design course for the Notan assignments.

Why use Shotdeck?

Why Should I Use Shotdeck as a Ringling College Student?

These movies (and so much more) can be found in Shotdeck:

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Shotdeck even tells you what aspect ratio the film is presented in. Many of Wes Anderson's films aren't usually presented in the standard 16x9 ratio, so it’s a nice touch for Shot Deck to document this.

Coco

Each screenshot also tells you what shot type it is. This can be very useful for storyboarding and understanding the composition of the entire movie. Furthermore, for Computer Animation short film composition of shots, this can be a helpful resource.

Ponyo

Every shot also has color swatches for the main 15 colors present in the frame. This can be very useful to color pick from and understand the cool-to-hot ratio in pieces. For a very colorful film such as Ponyo, it does a great job of capturing the actual colors showcased within the film.
