CRWR 110 Writing for Digital Media

LibGuide for course on "Writing for Digital Media"

Introduction

Creating Writing 110: Writing for Digital Media is a requirement for Creative Writing majors, and may also be taken as an elective by non-majors.

Your primary goal in the next three months is to create an online portfolio featuring a selection of writing and digital media that you've created. Your portfolio should continue to be developed beyond this class, so that it is functional and useful for you as a creator beyond your time at Ringling.

Therefore, this course is structured around weekly writing and content creation assignments. You will be busy this semester!

The topics/subjects that you create content about will be your choosing. I recommend that you develop expertise in a specific area related to your career/artistic goals through the content you create for this class.

Suggested Course Materials

Domain name and hosting plan (I recommend BlueHost).

Set up your free access to the New York Times. Install the app on your phone. Read the paper daily, looking for examples of good writing.

Social Media Accounts: you will set up an account for your personal writing profile at Twitter (BlueSky/Threads), LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Tik-Tok. You will be expected to post to these accounts.

AI Chatbot: You may use either ChatGPT or Claude for this course. You may want to buy an upgraded plan to one of these.

LinkedIn Learning: You may want to browse some of the videos at LinkedIn learning on topics like using Wordpress, Writing Blog Posts, Social Media, and creating YouTube and Tik-Tok videos.

Google Drive: I recommend that you use Google Drive and create a folder for this class to store all of your documents and class notes, research, etc. For each assignment, you are asked to submit a .doc file to Canvas in addition to posting it online. If you organize all of your writing into a Google Drive folder, it will act as a backup archive of your writing and drafts.

Uploading a .doc for assignments:

  • Create your Doc in Google Drive
  • Always put your name and heading at the top as follows:
    • First Name Last Name
    • Course Number and Name
    • Course Week & Current Date
    • Name of Assignment
And always include a title before your writing begins.
  • If your document is multiple pages, always use page numbers and a running header on all pages after the first page
  • Use Chicago Style for citations and feel free to enter citations using footnotes.
  • Remember: your document should include links to your published/posted online content.
  • Ensure you have followed all instructions in the assignment.
  • When complete, export your doc as a .doc file, and download it to your local computer.
  • Go to the Assignment in Canvas
  • Upload the document. Submit it by the due date listed.

DUE DATES: Pay close attention to due dates for this course. Most assignments are due either by Friday at midnight the week of class, or by Monday at noon the following week. Because of the fast pace of our content creation, you will immediately fall behind if you are late on any assignments. For that reason, I cannot grant extensions
